FEVER; FRANTIC or FRIGHTENED By Them? …Please don’t be!

A Fever is a great thing to discuss as nearly all of us are familiar with having had one, both as a child and an adult. The typical thought is  ‘QUICK! …STOP the fever!’ – and there are several over the counter and readily available medicines to give straightaway!

In the UK Calpol and paracetamol are the most used. A panic often sets in, particularly as a parent, with fear that their child may become more ill if it is not brought down straight away.

A Fever is considered when a temperature reaches 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 Fahrenheit).

The temperature spike can be the sign of any of the causes below, whereby our body is going into a natural reaction already!

  • Infection: Viral or Bacterial
  • Allergy
  • Damage to brain from an injury
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Hormonal imbalance

Did you know that a fever is actually a positive sign of a health change going on…DO NOT BE FRIGHTENED! …the body is fighting something itself and usually it is actually winning!

FEVER; FRANTIC or FRIGHTENED By Them? ...Please don't be! 1The Hypothalamus is the gland the size of an almond, situated in your brain at the base of the brain stem. It is in charge of our body’s temperature and it initiates an increase in blood flow within the core of our internal structure, in order to preserve heat and slow the cooling of the blood at the surface of the body. Raised body temperature stimulates our own mechanism of healing.

To ‘suppress’ the fever is intervening with the body’s own first line of defence and potentially lessens natural immunity in the patient.

What we can learn from a raised temperature is that something within is out of balance and this is considered a ‘susceptibility’.

A homeopathic approach is the way to understand what is at the root cause in our WHOLE system rather than just stop the temperature, i.e. what is the susceptibility? If we find and understand this root cause and support with appropriate remedies, we will see the  body improve and the temperature come down as it re-balances.

In fact, the body may need no treatment at all; given time and rest, a healthy body is likely to rectify itself. There is some research behind this here, for those interested: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4869589/

The action of a temperature on our immune system is a key part of our body’s own positive health management and when interfered with, it does not get a chance to work to its full potential.

I often describe a lesser illness, such as a cold or sore throat, where a temperature comes with it, a good example of Mother Nature testing our bodies – just as we have a fire drill practice in schools and office buildings, to test that there is an effective working method in place to protect us, should there be a fire.

Whether an alarm goes off because of smoke from a burnt piece of toast or a large spreading fire from a flaming stove top… there is something in place that needs to be regularly checked to be operating correctly, in order to be effective at the time of need!

FEVER; FRANTIC or FRIGHTENED By Them? ...Please don't be! 2If we suppress a fever with Antipyretic medication (Calpol, Tylenol etc) ,the body does not truly overcome the imbalance. Our immune systems do not get the chance to fully operate in the way they were designed to bring our bodies back to full health…

We are also perhaps unnecessarily introducing chemicals into the body which it then has to manage, particularly in the liver where the toxicity may be held.

  • If the fever rises persistently above 40’Celsius ( 104 ‘ Fahrenheit)
  • If the child has a fast arriving rash.
  • If there is a recent wound which may be infected.
  • If the child becomes listless or floppy and has not responded to previous remedies.
  • If there is severe headache or pain in the abdominal area with nausea.
  • If the baby or child has a history of convulsions.

A simple febrile seizure or fit, also known as a febrile convulsion, can occur when a child has a fever. They are generally harmless and last a few minutes, occasionally up to 15 minutes. The child may shake, twitch, dribble, appear to lose awareness, and sometimes have temporary incontinence and they will come back to a fully alert state – although may be very tired immediately afterwards. There is no evidence to say they cause brain damage or epilepsy.

What to do…

  • The main way to treat them is to remain by the side of the child and allow them into a safe, secure and comfortable position, where they will not bang against anything or hit their head.
  • Ensure they are in the recovery position if possible in order that they do not bite or swallow their tongue and can breathe easily.
  • Loosen any tight clothing and remove or add layers if necessary so as to not let them become increasingly overheated or get a chill.
  • Reassure them and try to stay as calm as you can yourself.
  • When they come too, offer sips of water and ensure they remain hydrated.
  • Make a note of time and date the fit happened and any other observations, such as a rash, headache, after an injury, stomach pains or nausea. These may be signs of other more serious conditions needing treating.
  • Do seek further help if you have any concerns or if the convulsions are frequent, so you can get to the root cause.

Here are some key remedies to have in the first aid cupboard to support a fever:
Belladonna is a great remedy
ABC… This is a great combination to have made up and in your cupboard! I regard it as the Homeopathic Calpol, for when you think your child is going down with something, is brewing a temperature and generally out of sorts, but there is nothing else specific. It is a combination of Aconite, Belladonna and Chamomilla.
Apis  |  Arsenicum Album  |  Bryonia  |  China  |  Ferrum Phos  |  Gelsemium  |  Merc Sol
Phosphorous  |  Pulsatilla  |  Rhus Tox

FEVER; FRANTIC or FRIGHTENED By Them? ...Please don't be! 3They will all be found in a Home Kit, available from a Homeopathic Pharmacy such as Ainsworths or Helios. My favourite kit is the Ainsworths 42 Essential Remedy kit (available overseas too) and the booklet in there is wonderful! https://www.ainsworths.com/kit-ess/
